Pushing the limits of modern stage entertainment, the Box is guaranteed to leave you talking about their boundary stepping burlesque for weeks after the fact. The club continues the long, illustrious history of the erotic scene in Soho, with a vision to propel it well into the 21st century.
A tradition of cabaret
When The Box opened early in 2011, it could not have chosen a more appropriate space to occupy than the old Raymond Revue Bar, the self proclaimed “world centre of erotic entertainment” when it premiered in 1958. The brainchild of property and publishing king Paul Raymond, the Raymond Revue Bar shocked the masses upon its entry to the London club scene. The Box is in the very able hands of a man who wants to continue this Soho tradition.
Simon Hammerstein is no stranger to the stage. The grandson of celebrated lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, you could almost say Simon was born in the spotlight. And that really shows in the expositions at The Box Soho.
Hammerstein’s first Box venture was in Manhattan which debuted to great acclaim. Looking to expand, he saw London as a natural fit for The Box’s vision. The fabled institution of theatre in London coupled with the storied seediness of Soho was a match made in burlesque heaven.
